GIVE TAX-FREE THROUGH RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
Who qualifies to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?
  • If you are 70 ½ or older, you can donate up to $108,000 per tax year directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) tax-free to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations such as Covenant Youth of Alaska.
How does a QCD work?
  • You must be 70 ½  or older at the time of gifting via your IRA to charity.
  • You may distribute up to $108,000 total in a calendar year to public charities, so long as it is completed by December 31 of that year.
  • Your IRA administrator must make the distribution directly to the charity.
What are the benefits of making a QCD from an IRA?
  • QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution for the year and help you avoid taxes incurred by normal distributions from a retirement account.
Please inform CYAK that you have made a gift by emailing [email protected] so that:
  • The CYAK Office knows to expect a donation in the mail and can alert you when it has been received.
  • The donation can be properly attributed to your donor profile and your year-end tax exempt donation receipt is accurate.

GIVE THROUGH STOCK/ SECURITIES
1. If Your Shares Are Held In An Account...
  • Ask your broker to make an electronic transfer of the shares to CYAK with the following information:
    • Covenant Youth of Alaska’s Fidelity Account #Z40-358666.
    • The Depository Trust Company (DTC) number is 0226
      • This number is needed if the stock is currently held in an account with a company other than Fidelity
  • Once the stock is transferred into CYAK’s account, we will receive notification of the transfer, and a receipt will be sent to you.
  • The effective date of the gift for this method is the date the shares appear in our account.
  • Please contact CYAK’s Finance Manager at 907-622-2702 or by emailing [email protected] to advise us that a gift has been made.
2. If You Hold The Certificate For Your Shares...
  • Please sign the stock over to Covenant Youth of Alaska, either by endorsing the back of the certificate or by using a stock power.
  • Make sure to sign exactly how the name(s) appear on the front of the certificate.
  • If you have already had the certificate reissued in the name of Covenant Youth of Alaska, it is not necessary to provide us with a stock power.
  • Both types should then be mailed to the attention of CYAK’s Finance Manager at PO Box 770128, Eagle River, AK 99577.
  • Due to the nature of the document being mailed, we recommend that you send it via certified/registered/express mail.
    • When the certificate is received, it will be immediately liquidated and a receipt will be sent to you.
    • The effective date of a gift made in this manner is the date of the postmark for certificates still registered to the donor, and the certificate date for those that have been reissued in the name of Covenant Youth of Alaska.
3. If You Are Transferring Shares Of A Mutual Fund…
  • Please contact CYAK’s Finance Manager by calling the office or emailing [email protected] to discuss how to initiate the transfer.

LEGACY GIFT PLANNING
Contact our office to discuss your desire to leave a lasting legacy for the furtherance of the mission of Covenant Youth of Alaska to share the love and hope of Christ with Alaska’s youth and young adults.

There are many different forms that a legacy gift can take. Here are a few common options that you may consider as you imagine your own legacy giving. Including, but not limited to:

  • Bequests: A bequest is something that a donor gives a nonprofit through their will, whether that be cash, property, stocks, or a portion of their estate. This is the most common and often simplest type of legacy gift for donors to set up.
  • Life Insurance: Donors can designate an organization as one of the beneficiaries of their life insurance policy. Or, if you, the donor, no longer needs the policy, you can donate the accumulated value to a nonprofit.
  • Retirement Fund: Donors can also designate an organization as one of the beneficiaries of their retirement assets, like their IRA, 401(k), or pension.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities: The donor gives a large amount of money to the nonprofit. The nonprofit then pays the donor a set annual income from that donation until the pay period ends (usually when the donor passes). After that, the nonprofit gets the remaining funds.
  • Retained Life Estates: A donor gives your nonprofit a piece of property that they own, but can still use during their lifetime. Once the donor passes, your organization can choose to sell or keep that piece of property.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust: This legacy gift is a type of trust gifted to a nonprofit that pays an annual amount to the trustee. After the trust is completed, the nonprofit receives the remaining funds.
